Holidays and Copperwork

Irving and I had a really lovely extended Winter break.  We  had our regular classes to attend surrounded by a few excursions, and some interesting extended learning at home, and a trip as a family down to SW Western Australia, to visit Willow and her fiance.

We had our Winter solstice celebration with a fire on the balcony, but sadly no ember baked damper this year, as it had been quite wet overnight, and so having a fire was a last minute decision.  We instead had freshly baked home made bread.

We got some last minute tickets to join our home school group, and headed with them to see the Teracotta Warriors at the WA Museum.  The whole exhibition was amazing, and the presence of the larger warriors  was formidable.

Irving turned 12, and we had a lovely family day celebrating with him, and Willow made him a fabulous birthday cake this year.

Irving and I learnt about harvesting Aloe Vera, and the need to drain the aloin from the freshly picked leaves to make it edible.  It was fascinating finding the sticky yellow substance had drained out after leaving the leaf to strain.

We tested and cleaned out this coffee machine, that we found in the hard waste, and discovered that it works, is missing the tamphead, which should be easy enough to replace, and needs a little attention to the finial on the top.  So that's part of our next jobs to get it functioning again.

There were lots of toasted marshmallows eaten during our stay with Willow, as they have a woodfire stove and the weather was adequately cold for our visit.  When we came back to Perth, it seemed to have finally gotten cold here too!  We had a lovely time visiting Manjimup, Busselton, Pemberton, Northcliffe and exploring the SW in general.  Particularly on our way home, when we kept making spontaneous stops into small towns along the way.

We headed to Busselton, found some great shops for tea, healthfood, jewellery- buying a few too many things probably, and then headed to a local jetty for Irving to do some fishing with Willow's fiance.

Out on the jetty.

We really loved our visit to the Manjimup Electricity Museum.  In fact I think it's the best Museum that I've been to in a while.  Much better than the WA Museum.  The electrical  tech side is well integrated, given it is about electricity they engage with it really well.  And it was an amusing and pleasant surprise to discover that a lot of the tech was from the old East Perth Power station, which is not too far from where we live.

We got to the Southern Forests Chocolate Company near Pemberton, and had the best chocolate that we've had in WA IMO.  They definitely rival our friend, Steven ter Horst in Adelaide (visit to Steven's shop here).

Arden sadly didn't make the trip with us, as he had a surprise last minute event via airforce cadets, and headed off to a camp for the week.  In fact he had quite an eventful lead up to his week away, as he got his learners permit, and he also got a retail job, working for the chain, City Beach.

Irving and I did quite a bit more copper work over the break, and one of Arden's and Irving's friends has joined us in our latest sessions.

We've been watching a lot of youtube videos to expand our copperwork knowledge, and we found this one particularly interesting and inspiring.  We loved that this man had taken up the traditional method of making and repairing old copper pots.

Irving and I have been reading "The Secret Garden".  Such a great book, and it's still fascinating to remember having discovered that people back then learnt cursive first if they were educated, and that printing may have been tricky.

Irving and I spent quite a bit of time having quiet coffee dates, where we took our current reading and headed out for a coffee with our books.  I've been learning about bicarb soda since finishing reading Portal.  Both books are quite fascinating, and I think Portal is a particularly valuable read on birth, as it explores many of the untalked about aspects of bringing life into the world.

Arden finally finished this Guns'n'Roses jigsaw puzzle.  He was finding the black rather challenging!

We found one of our favourite coffee vans down by our stretch of the river, which was a lovely surprise.  They have fabulous Polish pastries.

First Half of the Year!

Well I didn't mean to be so neglectful of this blog this year, but it turns out that I have.  We've had a very full year.  So I'll give a bit of an update starting with term 2.  Arden and Irving both continued with iceskating and music classes.  Arden was also busy with fencing, airforce cadets, and youth flying club whilst Irving and I took up the homeschool classes with Joy of Wood.

Arden continued to work independantly on a range of topics- including aviation studies, maths, science, and english, as well as joining in with activities that Irving and I were doing as it suited him.  Irving and I spent some time reading "Legends of Hawaii" by Padraic Colum and doing some painting, as well as doing various cultural studies.

My spoon partly made in our classes and finished at home.

Elastic band gun- our last item made in class.

Irving and I have done a lot of gardening this year,  He has been very interested in herbs, and is interested in any sort of gardening generally.  He decided that he wanted to make his own herb book, so we found a journal and cut out alphabetical tabs and  he's  been making notes as we grow different herbs.

As usual we celebrated winter solstice with an early morning fire and a cooked breakfast on the flames, including damper cooked in the embers- everyone's favourite part.

A good friend - The Whole Cake made this lovely cake for Irving's 11th birthday.  She is a naturopath and has a lovely herbal garden and knew that Irving was interested in herbs, and so she came up with this fabulous cake.  He was very pleased.

I have been continuing to work on various designs for my redbubble store  and French cakes and pastries have been a big theme.  I've been taking a painting and coffee break most weekends, and partly painting what I see and trying to do so quickly, so that my coffee is still somewhat warm by the end.  It has been an interesting experience!  There's also a bunch of my paintings inspired by Padraic Colum's "Hawaiian Myths" here.

Our mid year holidays were pleasantly refreshing and in Arden's case quite short, because he applied to TAFE again. He was accepted into a cert 3 in Ground Operations at Jandakot TAFE adjacent to the airport.  Irving and I had our usually 6week or so break, in which I was expecting to have to do lots of activities with him, but it seems he has finally developed enough interests that he enjoys indepedently, and so we had a bustly and relaxing break.

Pictures- knitting and Cake

Just finished Arden's doll!  He has named her Honey, and she's now happily tucked into bed with him.

Plus I just finished my first hand-knitted dish cloth.  Tried it out this evening, feels so much nicer than using a sponge!

Also I made my self a soaked grain lamington cake with 'body' cream for my  birthday cake.  It's the first time in many years that I've had a lamington cake, and the raw cream in it was delicious.

Abundance in the Air

Over the last week, Damien and I have been taking Christmas Bell, one of the Australian Bush Flower Essences. The essence itself relates to manifesting abundance, and I've been curious to see what sort of abundance we would start to manifest.

Well some little things had been shifting here and there, but today was full of events. This morning the kids had soccer at the Life Be In It centre, so we headed for the bus. We were late for the first, so jumped on the second. Damien realised we needed two tickets, and mentioned that to the driver, who asked how many of us were travelling. After abit of discussion the driver said, to just get one ticket and used it as a family pass, and if we were questioned later to pick up a second ticket. So that was that and we went to soccer.

After soccer we chatted with some friends, and headed off to get the train to our niece's birthday party. Along the walk we bumped into a lady we met last year, that we'd not seen since I was pregnant last year. We chatted for a while, and she offered us a plant from her garden. We were now a little late for the train and rushing to make it, which we luckily did. Just as we approached the station, that gates went down for the cars, and we ran up in time.

We had a nice time at our niece's 1st birthday party, eating cake, playing, etc until it was time to catch a train back. At the platform there was a Sheikh gently singing- it was very beautiful, though I didn't understand a word. When the train arrived we sat next to a group of noisy men from Penola, who were off to see Judas Priest. They were really friendly and lovely so we chatted to them the whole way, with one giving Willow advice on how to deal with mean people at school- they had been discussing why she was homeschooling. There was also a big sing-a-long of the Tigers theme song with the train driver participating by pulling the horn! It was hugely funny. When we got off the train, everyone waved to the guys, and the driver who waited for the kids to finish saying goodbye.

So at this point it's a bit late and we're off at Goodwood station, and we decide to wander up Goodwood Rd, to see if there's anywhere good for takeaway. After a bit of a walk we decide to get pizza at Savelli Brothers. We'd meant to try them before as the idea of quality made pizza to bake at home appealed to us. We ordered two, and were chatting away to the guy about quality of food, diet and ingredients whilst he prepared our dinner. It was quite entertaining and relaxing. At one stage he went off to get some oil, and was telling us about his truffle oil he'd been infusing, and that it was a secret recipe. Damien and I were both amused as we'd recently watched French Leave and there was an episode with truffles, so we'd been thinking about using them in food.

By now we were heading home with our pizza, and I remembered that there was $5 in my pocket left over from the show. I was thinking about what an interesting and amazing day we had when I thought I should offer the universe my $5, so I gave it to someone's letterbox. I hope it brightens their day.

And just to finish....................Thankyou!
